Keeping Your Pool Safe With Maintenance

When you think of keeping your pool safe, pool maintenance isn’t the first and foremost thing that comes into mind. The majority of people indeed believe water safety is an ever-prevalent problem. The evidence is in the cities that subsidize events that encourage pool safety that include tips to keep kids safe such as locks, barriers, and supervision. You would think that tips like these are all that’s important when it comes to pool safety, but proper pool maintenance will also keep you and your family safe from pool injuries and accidents.

Summer is upon us. The high temperatures, longer daylight hours, and added debris and contaminants from the rain make this the busiest time of year for pool maintenance. Owners of pools and spas need to be conscientious to these matters when keeping their pool clean. Here are some proposed pool maintenance elements that may be worthy of your concern:

Chemicals

Maintaining a Swimming pool involves the use of chemicals, a few of which can be highly hazardous. Unexpected or improper exposure to these chemicals can end in long term health consequences for children and adults alike.

Your pool needs to use many chemicals, some of which can make toxic gas or even fire when mixed improperly. For this reason, you should never mix chemicals, and it’s always a good idea to read instructions on how to add them in yourself. It’s better to keep these chemicals in effectively closed containers, high up out of the reach of kids and animals.

Electrical system

Because a pool’s filtration and pump system are electrical, it’s essential for every component to be wired safely and competently, so that it’s well insulated to avoid any possible accident. Another thing is that outlets should always be GFCI type. Additionally, no one should ever be permitted to use electrical devices in the pool, particularly cell phone chargers.

Vacuum Ports and the Main Drain Suction

The drain cover must be Pool Safety Act compliant. Also, vacuum ports in your skimmer or on the pool wall should have safety latch covers. They are super easy to put in yourself.

Debris

Bad weather commonly leaves surprises in our pool. We will frequently find branches, building materials, or even furniture at the bottom of our pool right after a storm.

It’s also possible for small animals like rodents or rabbits to find themselves in the pool or skimmer basket. When this occurs, do not let anyone go swimming. To safely remove them involves using disposable gloves. And in accordance with the CDC, the animal should be wrapped completely, bagged in a trash bag and thrown into the dumpster as soon as possible. Once it’s removed, the pool needs to be cycled, back washed and treated. The net used to retrieve the animal or any other tools involved should be thoroughly disinfected.
